Im trying to get into my steering column to find out if i can fix or replace the tooth locking assembly for the gear shift. when i pull the shifter back to get out of park and place it into drive, there is quite a bit of play. this happened because the previous owner would rest his arm on the gear shift and eventually it wore away the tooth. i am assuming the tooth locking assembly is in the steering column because its not underneath where the shift linkage hooks into the transmission.
now my question. ive got the steering wheel off and there is a black plate under neath being held on by a retaining ring and the plate seems to be under the force of a spring. i can push the plate in slightly (1/16") and could possibly (with another set of arms) remove the retaining ring but im not sure what is going to happen at that point. will this actually let me into the steering column or is it just going to spring all apart and leave me with a bigger mess then i am willing to deal with? should i leave this to a shop?

    thanks
    shawn

    thanks for the reply.

how do you get the black steering wheel lock plate off? theres a retaining ring holding it together compressed by a spring... im afraid to take this off and have the whole **** thing fly apart.

how did you get the plate off?

yea, so reguardless, im going to need the special retaining ring removal tool to get further into the steering column.
i can probably make something at work.
either that, or im going to leave it up to my mechanic.
    thanks everyone for the help.
