4x4 Vs 4x2 Rear End: Differences?

    I'm looking in to replacing the rear end in my 89 Chevy 2500 2wd. I've noticed that the rear end (Option GU6, 6 lug, 3.42 ratio) specifically listed for 2wd is much harder to find and more expensive than the 4x4 rear end, which are dime a dozen at junk yards in my area. Wondering if there is any MAJOR differences in the two that would prevent me from putting the 4x4 rear end in my 2wd truck?

    4x4 3/4 ton all have 8 lug nuts if I recall. If it could be made to fit you would have to carry 2 different spare tires.

    Everything I have found is all the same as far as 14 bolt cover, 3.42 gears, and six lug on both 4x4 and 4x2 axels. Just not sure if there will be a problem fitting it in, for example different spring perches or things like that?

    3.42 is a highway gear and that should be hard to find in a 4x4

    The 2500 6 lug and 8 lug spring perches May not be much diff, springs more so.
    2500HD 8 lug full floating will be a lot different.

    Some say all 2500's up have some form of locker in em???
    All are 14bolt, '86 up are best.
    Disk brakes are hit n miss it seems

    I never seen a 3/4 ton 4x4 with 6 lug axles. I seen 6 lugs axle on 1/2 ton 4x4's as the all are. I had a 89 1/2 ton 4x4 and it had 6 lugs.

    Lockers is always extra cost, GM never give you that for free.

    all "4x4, 6 lug wheel, GU6"
    Down South, should a 6 lug 4x4 match up with all components to mount with my 4x2 springs/driveshaft/etc...?

    it varies on how heavy the springs are on each.

    Drive shaft flange may be different as well. Might need drive shaft from doner with rear axle.

    The salvage yards will know if they interchange. btw Lots of vans were 6 lugs 2500's. I recall looking at a custom GMC van that was for sale and it was a 2500 with 6-lug wheels.
