I have a 97 chevy 1500 with the 5.7 vortec. I have replaced both the altenator and battery and still will not charge. I have replaced both positive and negative cables and still does not charge. Is there something I am missing, any info would be great.

Could be this or the gauge ..anything that would break the charging circuit

Umm... i know this may sound silly.. but I have found that the main connector for the gauge cluster likes to corrode.. Often whacking the dash will suddenly make the gauge start working again!!
To see if your Alternator IS charging you can use a metallic object... lets say a 9/16 wrench.. hold one end to the bearing hub on the back of the alternator. if the alt IS working the hub will be magnetized and the wrench will stick to it like its glued. if it is NOT charging there will be no magnetism at that location. Its usually the first thing i do on a charging problem to see where i should start checking for a problem. :)

is the no charge at the guage only or have you confirmed it at the alt?

Ditto....what have you done to determine it isn't charging? It sounds like to me that you might just be basing the non-charging situation on a gauge. You need to actually get a voltmeter out and check the voltage at the output of the alternator as well as the voltage at the battery.
