You don't have to pull the axles on a 1 ton dually ?
no. the drum slips on the hub. usually they rust into place like any other drum, and its a real pain to break them free since they are so huge.
I guess it's sorta like having your choice of pains.

OK, thanks guys, I made and offer on this truck .83 GMC 3500 series dually, think it is more than 1 ton since it has a 12' flatbed, (old military truck). Before I could drive it away, I noticed that the rear brake seal was shot, so just wanted to know how much time, to take it down and put it back together. The guy said he did the brakes about a year and a half ago, so that should help, since it only has about a thousand miles on it since then. Now , just have to get him to sign off on it , before I tear into it. I want it, as it is a flatbed dump, w/ a 6 x 12 steel bed. Thanks for the info.
There is no real reason to pull the hub though. only risking containamating the rear axle with the rust/ brake chunks by pulling the hub. not worth it to me..

This is a dually 14B ff rear axle. The drum is located on the inside of the hub, and is retained by the wheel studs.
What kind of GM FF rear axle has a removable drum without removing the entire hub?
I though only the Sterling axle had a slip on drum?

Here you can see how the drum mounts to the inside of the hub.
The drum cant come off unless the studs are pressed in, after being removed from the spindle. That means the axle has to come out, the retaining nuts removed and then the hub can come off.
This is the only way i know to reveal the brakes and backing plate.

Don't know how many of 3/4 are that way.
This 69 was burned in my brain because on the ford frame
we hung a chev trans behind a mistu diesel
and added a pair of 20gal boat tanks to sides.
Had to add airbags to front to keep off the tires.
yeah bubba. The 3/4 ton still uses the same axle and similar hub design. A and B hubs only differentiate by the depth of the hub itself.
Now Ford has a different deal going on, and the Sterling axle, does offer removable drums. These are kind of cool, though it does make disc brake conversions a little difficult...

Any way, thats the Ford axle, but the GM type requires the studs to hold the rotor to the inside of the hub just like the drum:
