rough idle 2000 silverado

I am experiencing rough idle after i start my truck. My engines revs for a few seconds, coughs and spits and almost dies, revs again, sputters, and repeats for the first minute or so after starting. I have the 4.8 V8 with 4WD. It also has a strange sympton on top of this, when i start driving and come to a stop sign, the engine will rev to 1000 rps for a second or two, then return to 500 and about 10 seconds later it repeats.
does anyone have any idea what the problem might be?
thanks for your help
