4wd

Do you really need 4WD to tow a boat?

No.
Towing is not about traction, it's about power to pull and a big enough truck to carry the extra weight on the hitch.
On a paved road 4WD serves no purpose while towing unless you're moving the boat through snow.
Off the pavement, remember the boat trailer is not 4WD and the truck won't change that.
You may find some short distances or water ramps that having 4WD may be a plus.

would you say that you could get by with 2WD on water ramps, especially if it was a rear wheel drive truck?

I personally wouldn't want to unless you know you are always going to be launching on a well maintained man made ramp.

With a truck that big you aint gonna have any problems 2 or 4 wheel drive!! Is that why you wanted to know about the trailer hitches??

yes, that actually is...i didn't think the 2WD mattered but I wanted to check. My Dad had a 2WD expedition with the 5.4 and it got out of 1.5 feet of snow fairly easily so.

The good thing about the 450's is that is what they are made for. They are made to haul and tow! Plus with the duals in the back you shouldn't have any traction issues on the ramps. That is one heavy boat though
