How Many Splines?

Howdy all, i was looking to put a locker in my rear end, but not sure how many splines my stock set up has, of course i cant find it in any of my manuals, and since i just moved to montana the local shops dont know me well enough yet to do me favors. I have a 96 chevy 1500 single cab short bed z71. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks

96 10 bolt truck rear axle should be a "C" clip style semi float axle with drum brakes. It should have an 8.5" ring gear and was available in both 28 spline and 30 spline configurations.
This axle changed in 99 when it went to disc brakes and a 8.6" ring gear, these were all 30 spline.
Unnfortunately you will have to scrape around for the BOM on the axle, but the easiest way to tell is to simply remove an axle and count the splines. Does not take more than about 20 minutes to get the axle out, and then re-install it.
The guys over at Randys can help you out.
