For your application bud, you can upgrade the gears and should be able to get many miles of decent use, with plenty of reliability. Do not hesitate, the gears will be a great choice.
Besides, you have a Jeep now, and that is something you can beat on. You can learn to wheel a little more aggresievely, and build that as you go. The more you build, the better it will perform off road, and the harder you can drive it. Always a betetr idea to not have to beat on your daily driver. Breaking a truck off road, and habing to take the bus to work is not fun.
You have a little different circumstance with your ride when compared to the OP. For you, gears, but for the OP with big tires and a large displacement small block, it might be a better idea to consider the upgrade stuff now.
You drive mostly on the street, so you will be able to make your combo survive.
I am not saying that the OP can't make his survive either, but odds are, that the 10 bolts with 38 inch rubber really do not stand much of a chance, and the larger axles are a good idea for him sooner than later.
