| This was taken from 4wheeloffroad.com. similar information to the previous chart I posted, but some missing details. This is the closest I have seen yet to indentification of these axles, but still not exactly what answers my question. Camino, I hope this helps. If I had the time myself, I would try to figure this out too. Let me know what else you may need for info, and I can try to look. Sometimes with several eyes looking, there is less that will be missed. | Those numbers only deal with the "BOM" this is simply the bill of materialsIt will identify the year, series, axle tube thickness etc. Something that we did not discuss, is that all of the Dana axles had different wall thicknesses, even from the same series axle. |

I disagree... the Dana 44 comes in several different sizes and widths... You can find a Dana 44 in a mid size Jeep, or you can find a 44 in a full size 3/4 ton truck.. I don't know what the numbers are, but I am pretty sure it's not anything to do with weight or width (in inches as stated above). *doh* EDIT: I didn't see the other 3 pages on this topic I thought there was only 1 page

| Okay, I have looked enough. I will come back to this subject later as it does bother me to have a question unasnwered. But from what I have been able to gather, there is no definitive logic behind the numbers on these. As long as a person knows what will work, then so be it. I am sure I will find it eventually, either a definite yes or no to the values, but as for now, I am moving on. Watch, this thread will pop up again in like a year, and the answer was so simple....LOL. Meanwhile, if anyone does find it, let me know.

| Could the numbers relate to the original production year?

| I always thought it was the inner axle tube size in MMs. Never took the time to find out otherwise. Jst figured if it wasnt, It was just a production identification number (series) given by Dana. I know how to id them, Just not real sure why they chose that particular number. Too busy to chase it donw. hope you find it.
