you'll get more clearance with a 44. if more mud that anything, i'd say d44's with chromo shafts and what not... if theres gonna be a fair amt of traisla dn rocks where wheels will be binding up at odd angles, you may want the stronger axle ( but as 75 pointed out, not really too much of a strength difference) and with the d60 you lose your clearance. and width shouldnt be an issue, you can change the amount the tires stick out by the wheels your choose and some fender flares

you get more ground clearance with a 44

My friends all have chevy trucks....... 4 of them with 14 bolt rear, and dana44 front, and 3 of them with dana 60 front, and 14 bolt rear. they all have bb 454's in their rides, minus one, who has more money than sense, and got a 637 merlin for his.......... none have brokem axles, and theya ll run 40" or bigger....... They are the same width, so it's not going to stick out farther than the rear axle like you've been told, that is, if your pulling your axles off of a full sized truck. As for the strength, I don't think your 5.3 is going to throw enough power at a 44 to break it....... the dana 60 under that truck would just be kinda cool, cause you know that that axle is gonna get you through the pit, and home again....
Now, have you considered gearing? your 5.3 is going to be working fairly hard to push those 39" tires around......... you may want to decide what axle, based off of what your budget is... the d60 is a bit more costly to build up, or so I have found. the d44 is also much easier to find in a driverside differential.... unless you are changing out the transfercase, and swapping it to the pass. side drop

I got tired of replacing axles with 36s on my dana 44, so i went to the dana 60 in the front and never broke another axle. Spend the money and do it right.

Sorry, don't get on here as much as I would like. I am going to spend the money and do it right. I'm going with the Dana 60 for the front and the rear. I like to play hard and I don't want to take a chance on breaking them. Plus eventually I'm hoping to go to bigger tires and lift.

I'm planning on going to 5.13 or 5.29 gears. Not sure about a new transfer case yet. Still looking at my options on that one.
