well honestly im about as mechanically inclined as a toilet seat! its needs a new transfer case and a tranny rebuild but when i crawled under it to try and maybe figurre out what type of transmission it was, it was all in japanese so i couldnt figure anything out to get some prices figured out

doesnt sound like a tcase problem but in fact, worn clutch packs like what you mentioned.

this job should costs you no more than 200 bucks to replace the clutch packs doing it yourself. although this is a good job to do if you have relatively no experience, a shop should not run you more than 3 or 4 bills for labor.

i love my 97 nissan. brad's right, parts can be pricey, but they're tough as nails. they're amazingly reliable, easy to modify, and excellent offroad. my only complaint is that the 2.4L 4cyl is waaaaaaay underpowered if you put oversized tires on it, but the great gas mileage makes up for the sluggishness. of course, if you keep stock tires on it, its a pretty quick ride. I highly recommend purchasing it. any other questions i'd be happy to answer. im no expert, but i do have some experience with one.
btw brad, great diagram, where'd you find that?
