'97 4x4 Suburban transfer case engagement

Hello, I'm new to this forum and have a problem with 4x4 engaging.

I rebuilt/replaced the transmission and tried to engage the 4-wheel, but the shift lever on the floor of my truck would not shift and engage (sounded like gear grinding when trying to engage) when sitting stationary with engine running and truck in neutral. The 4-wheel indicator diagram on the floor doesn't light up the front axle, either. I had a shop check it and they said they could engage with a lot of effort. It seems like a linkage adjustment type issue. Since I have the floor lever, I wasn't sure if the ball switch is part of this shift mechanism. Prior to the tranny replacement this shifted into 4-wheel, no problem.

Sorry if this has been asked a hundred times, but appreciate any help.

the linkgage engages the ball switch, and that powers the actuater

OK, thanks. I'll check the threads on voltage readings for the ball switch and start troubleshooting.
