1982 Ford F150 4X4 front end popping

Well my cousin was out at our farm the other day. He was out in one of our fields. The truck is a 1982 Ford F150 4X4 (4 SPEED MANUAL TRANNY), 300 Striaght 6. I don't know much about the vehicle. I just know when he put it in 4X4, the front end made a loud popping noise. All the wheels seemed to turn though. Any ideas what could be making it pop? Transfer case? Axle?

U-joints.... my best guess, i do belive those were a sort of semi-independant axle, and has 3 u-joints alone in the axle itself, common to have one pooched....

DO you know where the noise is coming from?
U-joints are very easy to see in the TTB fornt axle. If they are bad, you will know it. If they are bad enough tp make noise, then they will almost immediately go quiet.
If the front wheels still see to turn with power to them, then chances are that something is wrong in the diff. When spider gears start to go, they make some noise. Unless the gears are completely destroyed, that will still try to work, and you may get power to the front wheels, especially going straight. During a turn when the spider gears has to rotate, it will run accross the bad section and make some noise. This will continue to do so until the gears completely fail.
The TTB axle is open, and the axle shafts are hanging out. This axle does not have axle tubes so the shafts are exposed. This willl make visual verification of the joints real easy.
