I've had a couple 2wd trucks... As long as I had good tires on them they were fine, even in the Maine winters. If you can get a 2wd with a locking rear diff that would help.

there really is no reason why a 2 wheel drive truck would tow better than a 4x4, other than the 2 wheel drive would have a lower tongue height, but thats a stretch really. I wouldn't own a two wheel drive, too much fun in the snow and the occasional mud. Plus I have to plow so that wouldn't work. when you need the 4x4, ya need it. I hate it when people tell me their 2 wheel drive truck has been places a 4x4 wouldn't go. mind you its always a stock truck too. I love to laugh in their face because thats simply not true, and not even a little.

Hey Joe, two places a 2 wheel drive might go that my 4x probably won't: Land of higher mpg's and the commuter lane

| Livin on a ranch, I'd recommend a 4x4. I grew up on a ranch and we never had the 4x4 when we needed it. When we didn't need one, we had a 4x4, when we needed it, well.. we were kickin ourselves for getting rid of the 4x. 35" tires on a 2x4 is just ghey. No offense to you at all, but there's no point at all in putting $1500 into tires and rims and another $2-3k for a lift on a 2x4. If you can't afford a 4x4, how are you going to afford a lift and 35" tires for a 2x4? Might as well just get the 4x4 and put 33's on it. $0.02

geez almost every truck out there is some sort of ridiculous quad/king/super/stupid cab with 6 doors and room for 10 people, regardless of its drivetrain. I don't think the mileage is really all that better with two comparable stock trucks

I get about 15-16 when more or less empty and I think I'd do a little better without the 4x. When towing the flat block face trailer, I think the only real diff comes from adjusting the airflow over it. When I also have tall stuff in the bed I do about 2mpg better than without. Never did understand commuting in somthing that eats the paycheck, seems like defeating the purpose...guess that's more of me being cheap.

With the right tires like 33-35 inchers and locking rearend you can do a lot of stuff more than what you think.

personally i dont think a truck is a truck unless it has 4x4, never owned a 2x4 though would'nt do me any good with plowing snow, towing, 4 wheeling, or in winter. depends on what you do i guess. if yer town folk and just need something to do light hauling i guess it would'nt be bad. i use my truck for work, play, travel, and everything inbetween. if you do get a 2x4 hope you have some good friends who have 4x4's to help. i'd never own anything 2 wheel drive.
