Ain't nothin wrong with 2x4's, but the issue here is, her reasoning sucks. It's gonna cost just as much to lift and put tires on the 2wd as it would cost to just get and drive a 4x4.

heres a suggestion: my ranger doesnt have 4wd so i bought a $30 come-a-long. sure sometimes its a pain in the butt in the rain or snow getting out and tying off to a tree or whatever, but it gets me unstuck in a pinch!

I think (and i might be stirring up the wasp nest here) people with 4wd tend to be overconfident about their vehicles capability than someone who knows they gotta be careful with their 2wd. now, thats not saying anyone with 4wd cant drive worth a hoot. from my experience, its the typical arrogant teeny boppers and soccer moms (who, lets face it, just dont know any better) driving the suburban in the winter and thinking they dont have to adjust their driving style to compensate for the road conditions- let alone the fact they shouldnt be doing over 45 with 4wd engaged- its these clowns that i always see flying by me at 70mph in a snowstorm cuz im cruising comfortably at 45, only to find them a mile or two later, off in the ditch at the end of a 300 some-odd foot skid mark. i like to beep cheerfully at them as i putt-putt on by. as a seasoned 2wd veteran in maine winters, i know about the importance of driving to the conditions of the road, maintaining good static friction (not spinning the tires) to keep traction, and how to use the throttle instead of the brakes to steer out of a slide, etc. i think a lot of people miss out on this valuable knowledge because they simply rely on the 4wd to bail em out when they really could get by without it if they just changed their driving habits a little bit.

just re-read my post and realized it has almost nothing to with the real discussion, haha. just trying to point out that 4wd vs 2wd doesnt make or break the argument, driver mindset and skill plays more of a factor than anything, i think. a 2wd in the right hands could easily outperform a 4x4 in the wrong hands. (of course, for me it took being arrogant and getting stuck all the time to learn how to avoid getting stuck, so maybe the 'clowns' i mentioned are just on a slower learning curve, heh.)
