What is the difference between the 22r and 22re?

my buddy has a blown 22re motor and there is a 22r on criaglist in my area I was wondering what the diferences were. and if we can just stab the 22r in its place?

The 20R 2200cc. / 22R 2400cc. engines were the most popular US Toyota engines. For 20 years, 1975 to 1995, these motors served as U.S.Toyota's dependable workhorse engine. These engines powered the popular Celicas until 1985, and the unbreakable Pick-up models used these engines until 1995 (in commercial models). Turbo models appeared briefly as the 22RTE in 1985-1988 on Pick-up and 4Runners. The 22RE Fuel injection models appeared in 1983, on some Celica and Pick-up models. In 1985- the 22RE had a major change. The block was taller and the head shorter, compared to the earlier models. The engines' blocks and heads are not interchangeable (for practical and cost purpose).

Ask me about how to really make these run!, or better yet, using a 22rte with multiple turbo's. Wow!
Used to build these little guys for some sand rails before everyone got crazy and started using V8's.

20R, 22R uses a carb, and a carbed intake, while the "E" would indicate a fuel injected engine introduced in the 83 model year. This engine changed in 85, by using a taller block, so really there are two types of "RE" engines, but both share the fact that they are injected.
Then there was the "RTE", this was a turbo equiped injected engine, from 85 to 88 model years.

I get carried away typing.
They are all "R"s, and the "E" indicates injection, the "T" indicates a turbo.

here is a dumb question, and proves that the world is not as simple as it should be, but if the 20r is a 2200 cc and the 22r is a 2400 cc, why would they not call the 2200cc a 22r and the 2400cc a 24r? I mean can't anyone think of these things ahead of time?!?! Life could be so much simpler if a guy like me was allowed to label these things! LOL. HA ha .. .. .. Jk

i think they just want people to think they are getting something better than what they really are. well you should know junior your in auto sales.

LOL... Anyways, if I wanted someone to think they were getting a better product, I would have labeled the 2200cc one as a 26R... see bigger numbers must mean more right?

LOL!! no nothing against salesmen/women.. from the manufacture i mean.. sorry about not wording it like that. i know sales people can only go by what the manufacturing co. says it is.
