AL have to read a little more. While most of you are very creative about moving headlights (Florida used to have a 53" headlight requirement) or even moving bumpers, everyone fails to realize that modifications may not meet DOT requirements, and if they do not meet the dept. of transportation saftey guidelines, then they can be considered illegal.
The DOT will allow a modification to be performed and considered legal, unless they have approved it.
Just because a bumper has an extension added to lower the heigth, or headlights have been mounted in a crazy low location, does not mean that it is legal.
Even if a guys perception may make him think that he is in compliance, unless it has been inspected, and approved by the proper authority, it is still a modification, and the modification is considered illegal.
Here is a little taste. A couple lift kit manufactures are not available fromt some suppliers in some states because of the lack of DOT approval in that state.
This means that even a 2" lift from a manufacturer is not legal. While the lights, and bumpers, frame heigth, blah, blah, blah, are compliant, the lack of DOT approval will make this vehicle illegal for use on public roads.
Now the reality is that most law enforcement may never ever have enough desire to learn which kits are legal, and which are not, but just because we might not get caught, does not mean that our attempts to bypass the law are exactly acceptable.
Not really any gray area here. Either a vehicle is legal, or it is not. Many, or most of us, that modify our rides can find many infractions, and many of us can, and do get away with it, but it does not change the fact that the vehicle still has some infractions.
Anyway, just moving headlights, or lowering bumpers does not make legal. While it does show some crativity, if it is not an aproved concept, the mounting locations are just the makings of a decent conversation.

yes florida goes by bumper height and there are quite a few trucks with a bumper ext. on them to make them legal.

buying a lift of that size would cost an arm and a leg, so i would assume you would be building the lift.
without knowing the extent of your fab skills, i'm not afraid to say i would be scared to see that thing going down the road.

if this thing was to be trailered, i wouldn't have a problem, but trying to make it street legal!?!?

I'm glad you know everything... but I had no plans of building the thing, just buying it as a toy and I do not have a truck large enough to tow it around so I would have to drive it to where I want.


Thanx again 75. I have seen some big trucks driving around, there is one down the road that lives next to a cop. They have no problem with it.

i'm sorry if i hit a nerve, that was not my intent. i'm just concerned about your safety and of others who would be on the road with that truck.

I've seen a lot of insane lifts and most did not look safe.
they either had huge lift blocks on the axles, 6+ inches body lifts, extended mounts for the leaf springs and then you have the steering components either bent/twisted.

ol boy is right, cops generally dont care. its just another weapon in their bag if they need to get you for something else..... also, mud, hat size lift is easil attainable. i cna think of 4 trucks right off the top of my head that i see everyday that size (granted they arent s-10's)

I believe before anyone can consider so much lift. We should consider some saftey aspects. Lifts this big require quite a bit of engineering, and some mad fab skills.
After all, we do not want to end up like some of these fantastic examples of generous lift and street legalities.
