Changing gear ratio How hard would it be to reduce my gear ratio to get better fuel mileage, I dont offroad and so I dont really need such a low gear ratio as I have. I have a 2005 Dodge Ram 3500 dually quad cab and mostly use it to pull my boat

wouldn`t be that hard but would be expensive, gears from dodge last time i did a one tone was 1400 for ring and pinion only, buy a chip instead!! and exhaust, still cheaper...

1400 sounds kinda pricey. i can get a ring and pinion from peterbuilt for 750. and its alot bigger. plus that again for labor, ...... something is messed up here.

coulda been ripped off, at the time stuff was NEW so you know how things are way over inflated when they first come out, could be cheaper now i dunno, that was Retail too, not what we paid (:, plus stuff in canada is way freakin more expensive than US, we still don`t know why (:

How much of a change is the OP intending to change, and how much of an increase does the OP expect to gain from a dually? Rolling resistance alone is a big factor here. Getting that big ol truck rolling is difficult enough. Given the cost, how many miles is it going to take to offset the cost of a gear change? Could be years before the OP can realize a cost savings. Does not make financial sense to me.

is it a 4x4? im pretty sure if you change the rear gear ratio you have to change the front so they match or really bad things can happen when you engage the 4x4!! there are other ways of getting better fuel mileage. i'd do some research, exhaust, intake, ignition, and a tuner help alot. and for 1,400 bucks that will about cover all i suggested!!
