| Black smoke I recently replaced engine in 98 Mazda B3000. Found engine from a friend that was in a 2000 Ford Ranger. Mechanic said all he had to do was swap the wires. Truck is throwing out black smoke every time I hit the gas and sometimes stalls. Buring excessive amount of fuel. Auto store put on scanner and said Mass Air Flow sensor(MAF). Replaced it, now saying manufactors control air meter. Do anyone know what that means or can tell me what could possibly be wrong with the truck. Should mechanic have done something different. First time using him and don't know if he is honest or even good. |

| I am soon about to embark on a similar journey, as soon as my ribs heal a little more. Oddly, I have also found a motor from a 2000 ranger. Weird. But anyways, there are a few questions I always recomend asking and getting the answers to before you perform a transplant like this. First~ What was wrong with the Ranger? I mean, how did you come accross the engine? Accident, or problems? Second~ When your mechanic suggested just switching the wires, I am assuming you are talking about the engine harness right? Between 1998 and 2000 there was almost no change in motor design fro the 3.0l V6's... but still a good idea. However, if you went through this effort, did you swap out the ECU as well? Third~ Who is doing the swap? As I have learned recently, this is a very important question. Idiots and morons who think they can turn a wrench should not be let anywhere near your vehicle... Trust me, I am on motor number five in my Blazer and still no light... Morons... ANYWAYS.... Finally, If you or someone you trust does the swap, make sure ALL the internal fluids are washed out, and you should be replacing selas and gaskets as you go. In all fairness, this is probably a simple gasket problem... sounds to me like and intake gasket. When the swap was done, were the original sensors and parts from yours used, or new ones? Parts like the MAP, the TPS the EGR, the O2's and whatnot. I ask because if yours blew, and the ranger's was in a boneyard for anytime... these sensors fail easily. EGR is very cheap, like 10 bucks, but overlooked a lot... could also be causing the smoke. There is a lot of variables here... so let me ask you... Who did the swap? What wires did you replace, and what did you leave? If you replaced the Main engine harness with the newer, did you grab the ECU? Did you flush all the fluids and replace the hoses, gaskets, spark plugs and wires? Is it a new water pump or old? and so on. When these swaps are done, there is a kit you can buy, it is like 400 dollars, but it comes with everything needed to be replaced.... Did you use the kit, or use what yoy had? Now on to the actual problem.... When you see the smoke... ... do you lose power? Does it sputter? Is it EVERYTIME you give it gas, or only on cold accelerations? And finally, is it only when you accelerate, or does it smoke when you let it iddle by itself? I know I threw a lot out there... But I feel your frustration.... By answering some of these questions, we can get closer to solving this for you bud....
