hey welcome to the forum!, i can always recomend getting a custom tune, search "custom tune" and you can find stories and experiences guy have had, i had a superchips tuner for 3 years and got a *WESTERS* custom tune and WOW what a difference! power and fuel economy! If your thinking engine mechanical mods try some high flow heads and full roller rockers! you could gain an easy 50hp! and its only doing the top end of you engine, well i let the others chat in too, later...

welcome to the site. i see you want to make more power but are limited with money. unfortunately for you making power in that specific truck will be costly...especially if you're looking to pass emissions. obdII really puts you in a bind when it comes to power. even if you just wanted to do something as simples as a camshaft upgrade...your not gonna believe me when i say this.... your looking at almost a grand and thats doing all the work yourself. call me crazy but if you do a little research you will see that your truck has a hydrolic roller camshaft = not cheap. for a crane cam that will make any noticeable power increase your looking at around 400 hundred. then to make it function properly you have to get the tuner to set the computer for the change in lift and degree and everything else....another four hundred. plus lifters 200 bucks. over a hundred thousand miles? bigger cam new valve springs you see what im getting at haha. your best bet is to stick to the nice simple add ons and save your money. the less you mess with your truck the longer it will last. trust me sorry if this seems like a negative post haha

Less mess is absolutely right, Numero Uno you live in emissions control- No dice on a 383, or any internal parts. If you think you can get by with it, the Vortec is equipped with one key piece of electronics that will allow for a very small cam change or head change but not both without a custom program. Its the mass air flow sensor. Remember if you decide to do a cam swap and a custom program, max lift on stock Vortec heads is .500" lift. One superb addition to any vortec head is a set of roller rockers and maybe a set of 2.02in and 1.6 ex valves. You can reuse the stock retainers and valve springs. This will set you out aroun $600.00 For just the head work.

you want more power do head work port and polish the heads and put over size valves in it. little bigger cam nothing wild or you will be back at square one.

I like the idea of doing the heads over but, I herd also that if i do the heads over and make more compression, its not good for the bottom end and that might not hold up because that was wear on it and the top end doesn't is this true? Also where do i get roller rockers . What company is good what company isnt. Edelbrock??

roller rockers can be purchased anywhere. jegs and summit have large selections of them if you chose to do so. might i make a suggestion though. it is hard to do a build when this might be your only driver. if this is your daily driver, why dont you find something cheap and start with a clean slate. keep the 96. at this point, you will have alot more options available to you plus a vehicle with half way decent mpg plus your "weekend toy".

Very good sugestion but I also have a 98 ford contour that gets the great gas mileage. This is like my project truck. I cannot find a truck like it shortbox stick 4x4 and i like the 96 b/c of the new motor and I like the 96 dash and If i could i whold sell this one and buy another one but this one seems to be pretty rare. Its a little rusty so I am going to repaint the whole truck and redo the body. I have a shop to do this all I just am not too into the mechanics part but am all about the body work. but you would be right if this was my only car.

Don't waste time on trying to tune a motor and find what will work parts. Install a Vortech Supercharger and be done with it. It will bolt right on, come with a preprogram chip and all the parts you will need. This is the only noticeable HP increase you will see for the money and NO headache.
