97 cummins 5 speed-lost 3rd & 4th gears

I was driving down the road in my 97 dodge cummins turbo diesel 4x4. No unusual noises. Was in 3rd gear and it acted like it popped out of gear. No 3rd gear. No 4th gear. 1st, 2nd, 5th, and reverse work fine. Like I said there was no strange noises, no grinding, no crunching. Just lost those 2 gears. Any ideas?

Sounds like you might of lost the 3-4 synchro

Woah, I was just about to post this same thing. Yesterday Hubby and I switched cars, on my way home I couldn't get it into 3rd, today 4th just went out, this was on a 99

if you lost synchro's you'd still be able to get it into gear.....

synchro's just take care of the driver getting the input shaft up to speed (double clutching)

i think it's more then a synchro problem.

Well our problem turned out to be syncs plus hubby also created another problem trying to force it.
