88 Chevy c2500 700 R4 shift problem

I purchased a 88 c2500 about 3 weeks ago.. It has the 700 R4 tranny It does not shift properly
I have to go 20mph to get it to shift from 1st to second gear and it shifts hard when it finally shifts..2nd to 3rd shifts at about 35 mph..3rd to overdirve at about 45..I have checked for vacuum leaks and cant find any..
I looked at the tranny and do not see a vacuum diaphram so I assume it shifts electrically?... Any ideas what might be causing it to delay in shifting?
Any way to adjust when it shifts?
Thanks
Bill K

Bill, the 700 is a cable activated transmission.
Look on the throttle assembly for the cable that leads to the transmission, and you will find the solution to your problem. A quick inspection will determine whether or not you have a broken cable, or maybe a bracket, or even something that fell on the cable casuing a bind, and throwing the adjustment off.
Late shifts and a hard shift would indicate a tight cable, which tells me that the routing has been altered, and perhaps something moved, or something has altered the cable and is causing the problem.

Ok Thanks
I installed a throttle body spacer last week and that is when this all started. I followed the instructions for adjusting the TV cable
but it did not seem to help...I looked at everything again and apparently the locking button on the TV cable housing is broken and the housing is not locking into place..I called GM and they want stupid money for that little part
so I ran a small sheet metal screw into the cable housing to prevent it from moving..this fixed the problem and the truck is now shifting properly..
I don't know how long this half *** repair will last so I will comb the local junkyards for a replacement housing....thanks for your help
Bill
