'89 Chev C1500 puff of oil smoke when i start

what gives??

when i start my truck, i get a cloud (not a thick cloud) of oil smoke. oil levels havnt changed, once its running, i cant smell it, exhaust seems clean.
ive got new wires and plugs, the old ones didnt seem oily or dirty, just old.
i DID have a problem a month or two ago where i checked my oil level and it was right low (this after a shop oil change) so i dont know if they just didnt put enough in or not. (i do my own oil changes, just was in a hurry) topped up and levels havnt changed since.
um. not really sure what else to list.
i have no idea why its burning oil. id love some suggestions. thanks.

also, something is throwing a code. (one blink) i cant seem to find anything online that tells me what the codes are. some help with that would be appreciated as well.

thanks
shawn

Oil smoke on startup usually means defective valve guide seals. They may just have hardened over time so you could try a can of engine oil stop leak to soften them. As for your codes try troublecodes.net for help.

thank you for the reply.
i checked the codes and i realized that my check engine light is INFACT the light that will flash when there is a code... HOWEVER... my parking break light is throwing some kind of code. atleast two different codes over the time ive had this truck. previously, it flashed 6 times, now, its flashing once.
long flash short flash and repeat. before, 6 short flashes then a long flash repeat... i can find nothing on this on the net or my Haynes manual.

The parking brake light doubles as a warning light for the parking brake and as a warning for the rear anti-lock brake system. Check your fuses, check your brake fluid level and check the electrical connectors at the master cylinder and ensure that they are clean and tight. Do a search of this forum for RWAL or brake warning light, there was a super thread on this very topic a couple of months ago.

Another thought, the brake warning light also is used by the pressure differential switch. This is near the master cylinder with a single wire electrical connection. Try unplugging that wire and see if your light goes out.

for the smoke on start up, gm bulletin #066102 replace intake gaskets and valve seals with p/n 10132715.

for brake warning lamp, key on unplug/reconnect brake module(black plastic module mounted by master cyl with 2 connectors) and drive.

would it have anything to do with the fact that i have my ABS cable disconnected because it was malfunctioning??
there has been two seperate brake light codes in the past few months.

and how difficult is it to change this intake casket.... or how bad is this problem?

intake gasket is a piece of cake...and as far as your puff of smoke,,, just think....no more dry starts!!!..dried out valve seals is a very common 350 issue
