Trans making a growling sound, any idea what's up?

i have a 96 chev 2x4, with a 4L60E. the transmission makes a growling (almost a loud purring noise) at low speed, and at a stop,it is more noticable. if i put the truck in neutral, and rev the engine, the sound changes with the rpm of the engine. the sound is not always there though. it cut in and out, disapears for minutes or days at a time. i changed the transmission fluid and filter a couple of months ago, when i got the truck. Any ideas on what it might be?

Cat stuck up under your truck

Was the sound there when you first got the truck?

Not that i heard. it did it about 1 month after i bought it, and within a week of changing the fluid and filter, it happened for a couple weeks on and off. We have a guest over and they are borrowing it, so i have not driven it in a couple of weeks. i took it back this morning, and heard the sound. although the sound is much loader than it was the last time it happened.
i also baby it when i drive it, and the guest probably drives it a lot harder than i do.

Have you checked the fluid since the change. I wonder if you have a leak or didn't fill it up all the way. Also what did you fill it with and how much?

if there was alot of miles on that fluid that you changed out, keep an eye out on new leaks that you may develop.

I checked the fluid, it was filled up to 1/3 of the way between the two holes on the dip stick (in the hot area). i check it with the engine runing in park. the vehicle has been sitting since this morning (so about 5 hours). i just started it, ran it through the gears and test the fluid. the sound is not there rite now, either.
