Oil in my coolant

i have a 96 fullsize chev, 2x4 with a 305. My friend borrowed my truck on the last week, and blew the belt, and continued to drive it for about 3 km, or so. when he got to my house i looked at the temp gauge and it was maxed out. I changed the idler pulley and tensioner and put a new belt on it. it appears to runs ok, but i noticed oil in the coolant. i do not know if this is a new development, since i have not check the coolant for atleast 5 months. there is no coolant in the oil (yet) but it does seem like the coolant is disapearing now too. i went out of town on the next day so i did not get a chance to monitor it.
is this a cracked block?, or is there pressurized oil in the head?
Any ideas?

could be several differant things. block, blown headgasket. how low is the oil?? is it missing quite a bit of oil?? how often are you adding water?? i think your friend needs to have his but kicked.

i swap vehicles with my mom on the weekend, to go on my trip, she put about 150km on the truck and the coolant droped about 6 inches, and the oil level seems to be at the same spot as when i left. oh yeah, i changed the oil when i changed the belt and pulleys

pretty common for 305 to crack heads when they get way overheated. Chances are that the coolant is getting out through a cylinder, and leaving from the exhaust pipe.
If you get lucky it may just be a head gasket, but it will have warped the head pretty bad.

The truck does not overheat, infact the temp never gets above 70 now. i'm thinking the thermostat is toast

are you sure its not tranny fluid? the tranny cooler is inside the radiator and is notorious for cracking. check your oil and tranny fluid to see if theres any coolant in either if them....

if it is your tranny cooler (my guess), your prob gonna be in for a new radiator and and tranny overhaul.

the trany fluid is still nice and red, with no signs of coolant in it (that i can tell). the Coolant has, what looks like, a layer of chocolat sirup floating at the top.
