riding HOT in Alabama

For anyone that hasn't heard, we are in our 10th straigth 100+ degrees day in the heart of dixie ( a new record fyi ). My problem is that my AC on my 1989 S10 does not work. I believe it is the AC clutch because it will not engage even if I jump it straight to the battery. I have never removed an AC clutch and would like to know the procedure. Do I need any special tools? Also please give me a "AC gauges for dummies" lesson on diagnosing AC units using gauges. I like to do my own stuff.

I don't remember when they switched to R-134a. Your's being an 89 I think it is still R-12. If it is you can't buy it. You'll have to take it to a shop. You can convert it to 134 but you'd have to change all o-rings. The clutch should come off pretty easily. remove the belt. There should be 1 bolt or nut in the center of the clutch. remove that and the clutch will come off. Might need to pry a little but don't get carried away with it.

If it is 134 then the high side should be around 220 and low side around 40 it idle.

more questions

Is there an easy test to check the AC clutch coil? Being that the clutch does not engage even if jumped straight to 12 volts, leads to a bad coil or am I way off base?

if you have a direct ground and hot it should click. They only other way I know to do it off hand is to jump the low pressure switch with the ac controls and key on.

Camino, I don't know what's worse having AC that won't work or realizing the mistake of not getting AC.
