96 5.7 vortec stalling?

i have a 96 3500, 350/auto. the truck just shuts off periodically while driving.
sometimes it starts right back up, but other times it takes a while.
it has dual tanks, but i abandoned the rear tank b/c the filler pipe was rotted out . the fuel gauage only read 1/2 when i fill up the front tank, but the needle flutters, back and forth real fast. i have a feeling it has something to do with the fuel pump/gauge. any thoughts?

could be the pump. but I'd check the relay first.

well the truck ran good today. if the pump went, wouldnt it just die and not run? it seems like a loose wire or connection of some sort. just the thing to make it hard to trouble shoot.

they can act wierd. It might be overheating causing it to stop working, then once cooled down works again. Since your gas gauge is inaccurate if you are running the tank below 1/4 you do not have enought fuel in the tank to keep the pump cool. The gas in the tank is what keeps the pump cool.

But It could just be the relay overheating as well. I would change the relay (pretty cheap) and see what happens.

you know it could also be the wire harness/connection for the pump at the tank as well. There have been problems with them shorting out at the connection. If you do end up replacing the fuel pump get a new harness too.
