Expect to pay around $1500.00 (US) for parts and labor for a typical 4x4 application. Ratios all cost about the same, so don't let that be the deciding factor.

Get it wrong, and you will be doing it again. Here is the thing about doing it yourself. You have no way of knowing if it is right or wrong. Kinda like a shark repelant suit, only one way to check. Either way, if it works, you are OK, if it does not,,,,, well........

75 is correect on the skill level, on my 88 i needed new gears, theres 2 places i dont go on my truck, the tranny and rear end, ill rebuild engines all day instead of touching those 2 items, you might actually find a whole rear end cheaper and is easier to put in versus replaceing gears. you just have to know what your puting in, like most 2500s have 410, mine had it but i put 373 in, replacing the whole unit is easier

| the most important thing to know is about back lash. taking it apart and putting it back together that's the easy part. but back lash you better get a book about rear ends and they will tell you. back lash if you have too little when your driving and you let off the gas you will get a jerk and hear a ping sound out of the rear end. and if you keep it that way you will break a tooth off a gear. and if you have too much you will hear the rear end grinding. so before you just rip you old one out you have to measure how much back lash your stock one has. so what i'm trying to say is do your homework before jumpimg streight in and not having anything to drive until you get it fixed.

"Backlash" is only one term that is part of the set-up process. You will need a dial indicator to meaasure this. This will be set at around .008" too .012". Accuracy is key here so you will need to buy the proper tolls and equipment to do so. Accurate equipment is not cheap. You will need to know how to set up the "pinion depth" and "pre-load" for the carrier and the pinion. "Tooth contact pattern" is another important term that you need to know. The other importent part about the contact pattern you need to know is how to change it and how to actually verify it. You will also need to know which is the "toe", and which is the "heel" of the gear, and not misunderstand these with the "drive side", or "coast side" of the gears. You will need a press to remove the bearings and install bearings. I find that the use of the freezer, and a small toaster oven makes installation much easier, but removal is a different story, and you do run the risk of hurting a bearing if you need to remove a bearing to add shims when the pinion depth is wrong. Depending on howm any times you remove the pinion will determine how many "crush sleves" you will need. These are not re-usable, and must be replaced every time. Get one of the above elements wrong, and the gears will be noisy, and destroy themselves rather quickly. I am not trying to discourage you from doing a gear change yourself, only suggesting that you recieve some assistance during your first attempt. Again it is not terribly difficult work, but getting anything wrong will result in a pile of metal parts that are no good. Given the amount of money involved to repair this, it is cheaper to get it done by a pro from the beginning. If you have someone that can look over your shoulder while you learn, that would be super. Better to learn from someone to correct mistakes as you make than, rather than learning about your mistakes after the damage is done.
