Transfer Case Problema and Questions

I have 96 1/2 ton with a 4.3 and 5 speed. This has been trouble free until last week when my rother was using it. He was driving on th einterstate and the transfer case went to neutral by itself and the shifter was still in 2 high. After moving back and forth a few times the transfer case went into low range. He drove it carefully to the next exit and was able to get it to go back to high range. With the shifter in 2H and down-shifting out of 3rd to 2nd the tranfer case hit low and now is just stuck there.

I got it home and checked the shift linkage and it seems to be functioning normally. I can hear the clicks as something is moving inside the case as the shifter is moved.

Any ideas to check before I take it to someone to tear the transfer case down?
Thanks, Bob

Probably the actuator on the TC. If it's vacuum, check for leaking line. If it's electrical ya might want to change it. Not to expensive and should only take an hour or 2.

Please forgive my ignorance, but what and where is the actuator. I figured that would be for a push button system but my truck has a shift lever.

If it is something else please point me in the right direction and I will check it out.

Thanks, Bob
