cutting off exhaust

this may be a simple stupid question... but is it safe to cutt off my exhast pipes underneath my truck... i have after market exhaust.. what kind i do not know because i bought the truck with it already installed.... but im just making sure it is safe to cut off the pipes right after...whatever the wider part would be called? ive got small pipes and dont like the look of them, i would rather just cut them off, figure itll be louder too

as long as you keep the muffler and dump the pipes past the cab you should be fine.

alright thanks... 1)will that even make it any louder or not? also... 2)i tried once to disconnect the pipes at the muffler.. theyre not welded in, just shoved in and clamped.... and when i undo the nuts on the u-bolt to loosen it, i still cant get them apart because the pipes have been almost krimped in place by the presseure of the clamps... is my best bet to just cut them off?

it won't be any louder to bystanders, but depending on how close you dump the pipe to the cab you may have louder interior noise. those pipes will not come apart very easy. best bet is to cut the pipe flush with the back of the clamp so you still have some material left if you decide to upgrade the exhaust later.

the only time you can have turndowns underneath a vehicle is with splitbodies. unibodies are illegal for turndowns because of the lack of space for the emissions to safely leave the vehicle.

split bodies is referring to trucks where the bed and cab have the gap between them. unibody would be referring to a SUV, jeep or the like where it is one continuous body. with a unibody it is best not to dump the exhaust under the vehicle because the fumes could enter the "living space". with a truck it does not matter because normally there are not any passengers in the bed.

i ran into the same problem with the ranchero when i had it. the 91 1500 that i had had turndowns straight out of the flowmasters. truck sounded great but kind of embaressing in the winter time. it made it look like i was burning oil underneath the truck.

pscheers is an unknown quantity at this point
i thought a uni body was a vehicle with the fram built into the cab itself..i have a 1985 iroc z28 it is a uni body design , it has no frame , only a front clip or frame rails that attach to the fire wall .... most jeeps and suv have frames ...so i dont thin they r called uni bodys , i believe u r wrong on that topic ...i appolgize for corecting u but i feel like i have to set it straigt since he is still learning ..everything else is correct about the exhaust and gasses...
