problem with a friend's truck

hey everyone...my friend at work has been having problems with his truck and frankly..it's stumping me too...he drives a 2002 chevy silverado z71 with the 5.3 in it..and he had a rubbing sound comming from the front driver's side wheel, so he took it into a mechanic and was told it was his wheel bearing...so he changed it and $700 later the sound is there and louder...anyone have any suggestions?

Lightbulb Apparently...

Apparently, this is, or at least, used to be normal. My uncle has a '97 Z71 and his tires rub on the frame when he turns the wheels all the way to one direction or the other. His truck is entirely 100% stock and this still occurs. If this is what is happening (check for rub marks on the frame), I wouldn't be too concerned about it. It won't blow out a tire or anything like that.

Your friend may only hear it on the driver's side since he is sitting practically right on top of it.

Sometimes its very difficult to determine which side the hub is bad on. no joke I would swap the other side out. atleast go back to the shop and tell them they misdiagnosed the problem.

if he hears the noise when going striaght, its not rubbing. he wouldnt be able to turn if it was already rubbing while going straight

Arrow That's true.

Caminokid's right. If the wheel were rubbing just going straight, you couldn't turn the wheels.

It's either, the other wheel brg, or the front differential carrier bearings which is a fairly common problem too.
