truck dies...

hey everyone, brand spankin new to the club here and was looking for some help.

I just got an 86 chevy custom delux, 2 wheel drive, 305, automatic for free from a guy I work with. only problem is it dies when you try to "go"

that is, it starts just fine, when you put it in drive (or reverse) it boggs down to a real low, barely running, idle. then when you give it gas it dies. if you rev it a bunch, slam it in drive and bust the tires loose you can usually get it off the line (barely) but other than that....yeah

anyhoo, I thought it was a carburation or intake issue like it was flooding or maybe the mix was REAL rich or lean, so I replaced the stock carb with a spare edelbrock carb and an edelbrock performer intake manifold I had sitting around the garage. both intake and carb worked great when I pulled them off my roomates 350, but to my dismay the problems still there. I havnt had much chance to play with it since then, but I do know that when I retard the distributor even the slightest bit (thinking it was a timing problem) it backfires a lot (and I mean a lot) but if I advance the distributor the idle slows about 2-300 rpm's or just outright dies, but still wont move. someone mentioned turning the dizzy cap 180degrees (sound right?) but what do you guys think?

Heres my take on it. First dont rev the heck out of it and slam it into gear, Great way to end up with a parts truck instead of a daily driver. Secondly as far as advancing the distribuitor 180 that woiuld only apply if you recently installed the distribuitor. If this just happened then I would suspect a timing chain. Check TDC on #1 and see where you rotor bug is pointing. Should lead you down the right path if timing. You never stated how it ran after you got it moving after you tried to destroy the trans by slammin it in gear. If it still barely runs, check fuel delivery. FUEL FIRE AND AIR are the requirements here, Has to be one of them and air usually aint it.
