no fuel

I have a 1998 Z-71 with a 5.7 V8. I am getting little to no gas to the engine after removing the fuel pump, cleaning the tank and putting in the new pump. It starts fine but after five minutes it slows down and I cant go any faster than 10 to 20 mph. the engine just sputters, I can stop, shut it off, start again and I'm good for a few more miles. I have changed the fuel filter and tried carb cleaner.... HELP!!! before I torch it

Welcome to the forum bjf1280
Depending on how you cleaned the tank, there may be stuff clogging it that work free after assembly. Or the pump may be bad. What happens after you run it for ten mins just sitting? Have you tried watching the pressure during this ? Any codes ?

The fuel pump is new and after running for 5 to 10 minutes at rest I am still unable to depress the gas pedal very much without the engine stalling. I do not have a pressure tester so I have not done that. I am however going to bring it to someone to see if there are any codes. I'll let you know...Thanks

I dont think the pump is junk just yet,it was only in for a couple of miles of driving before the problem started. As far as the CAT is there any way to check that or will that come up as a fault code?

You will have a code if the cat is bad but it can also be pressue checked at any reputable shop. It shouldnt cost you much to get the cat tested but I would check it.

I'm gonna have it checked in a day or two, how much to replace the cat at a shop if thats what it is? Someone else I talked to was surprised I haven't replaced it yet since I have 167,000 miles on the truck.

I haven't changed the cat on my 89 and its got 209+ thousand on it. As far as price goes the cats are very pricey. I checked just for giggles on my truck and I believe it was around the $200 range. Some are more and some are less. You can also get universal fit cats for less than an OEM. You'll also have to take into consideration the shop's mark up plus the labor rate. I get a 15% discount at a local parts store so the price I gave you isn't what the average person pays. The shops around here get around 35% discount and then they mark it up as they see fit but usually no more than what any average person can walk in and get it for. Your problem does sound like a plugged cat. You can self test it by disconnecting it from your manifold and see if it runs better or cut it off and see but in order to stay legal (atleast in NY) you'll have to replace it. A lot of people just punch them out so there's nothing in there but it's a heavy fine here if you get caught doing that.

Cat for my '94 2 weeks ago at local shop was 120 + 30 labor. Nothing fancy, just a Walker. First replace for mine and I was replacing it due to external rust from seawater.
