| 93 Chev 1500 My truck starts fine when it is cold but when the engine is warm and I try starting it the starter will drag. I think the starter is going bad but is the heat from the engine causing it and is there some kind of heat shield that can be used? Thanks, Ron |

| Welcome to the site: Hope we can get you pointed in the right direction Ron. You are experiencing a common problem with Chevrolets, and a few things could be causing a warm start issue. First off, you will want to verify that all of the electrical connections are good, clean, and free of corrosion. Sometimes the cable can be all messed up inside of the insulation. The terminal ends on the battery are known for this. Next, heat saturation is a problem with the Chevy starter, so this could very well be a problem, and there are several options to resolve this. You can wrap the starter, and there are heat shields that are available. I am not partial to this methid, as I believe this is more of a band-aid. You can also replace a probably tired and weak starter. If it has been in the truck for a while, it has probably had to start the truck many times and it is telling you it is tired and wants out. Replacement is a reasonable solution. As long as we are talking about replacement, you might consider a mini-starter. These gear reduction mini's are higher capacity starters that have higher torque, and because of thier size, have more clearance that allow the thing to be less likely to heat soak, so shields and such are no longer necessary. These run a little more than a conventional starterm but well worth the extra dough. The last option would be to install a Ford style remote starter solenoid and bypass the solenoid found on the chevy starter. You are not running a high compression engine, so this may not be required, but the remote style solenoid helps out in many cases. Some might suggest removing the starter and having it checked, but if it were me, I would not remove a starter without replacing it. If I take the time to remove the starter, i am sure going to install a new one. Good luck, hope it shed some light on things. |
