muffler removal

first off im new to all this. i drive a 1998 chevy k1500 5.7l and i decided that it is too quiet. i am considering cutting off the muffler and just putting in some pipe versus dropping $400 for new exhaust. a buddy of mine did it to his 1998 dodge 1500 5.9l and it sounds good. i am curious of others who have done this what there thoughts are. also i know it reduces low end torque but will this prove to be a bad thing. if so when. if anyone who has done it would tell me the pros/cons of this that would be great. thanks

IMO to just cut the muffler off is not a good idea. I would go to an exhaust shop and buy an aftermarket muffler (flowmaster etc..) and replace the stock muffler and then put a simple turn down out of the muffler. your are looking at 100 bucks tops!

i took your advice and went to a muffler shop today and asked about getting a new muffler put on. however ive got dual in and single out on my muffler and they told me that it would run me about $400 and for a flowmaster $450. then they mentioned that they could make a piece to out get the dual into single tube for $100 and the put a flowmaster 40 series for another $140

oh nonono.. you can dual in single out flowmasters and just do it your self. A new exhaust hanger (generic hanger from any parts store), ubolts, muffler and turn down, with some basic handtools (drill, sawsall/hack saw) and you are set.

They just want to rip you off!

your in the right section, i just did the exact same thing to my truck about 3 weeks ago. I went on Ebay and bought a dual in dual out Flowmaster Super 40 for $80, 10 for shipping! it cost me $30 to have it installed, def the way to go. its much louder then other people who have a full exhaust that ran um 500 greenbacks. give it about 500 miles to break it in and it sounds incredible! i get compliments all the time on it, def the thing to do if you want a sound that turns heads! I know what your talkin about with the shops tellin you $400, they were tryin to jew you out of your money and thats why i took it into my own hands and i couldn't be happier! i hope you take my advise into consideration, i have a 97' k1500 with the 5.7 350 vortec. i could take a picture of what the muffler setup looks like if you want, go ahead and let me know!

everyone around here has the muffler removed as you want and it's annoying as ****. doesnt not sound good at all, way too high pitched and starts popping at high rpms. flowmaster 40 is definately what you want.

I must be an old 33 year old because I hate loud exhaust unless the noise is being caused by the rumble of a nicely built engine. I try to keep as quiet as I can be. If I wanted loudness I'd buy me a Harley
