hehe, seing this is in the chevy section, it sounds like you have a very common problem on your hands. chevy tailgates are prone to problems. mine wouldn't latch and i had to rebuild the latching mechanisim inside the tailgate. is this your problem?

Alot of times I've seen the latch pins wear down so much it makes it loose. If it's not aligned good it'll also bend the metal around where they screw in and cause major problems

My brother had this rod installed on his HD-truck that makes the gate very light it can be closed with one finger I think new trucks come with it now.

I have this lock dealy on one of the screws on my tail gate it takes a special key to break it loose so that my tailgate won't get ripped off.

usmceric1 will become famous soon enough
When I bought my truck the OE tailgate was rotted at the hinges. I bought a brand new GM tailgate from LMC truck. Fit perfectly. The new latches are kinda tight. But at least I know it is closed.
