I am planning to restore a recently acquired 1969 Chevy truck. I have searched but I can not find out exactly what type of V8 engine is in this truck. The two sets of numbers located on left-hand side of the block, facing the cab, are 103070PB and 16B538136. This V8 is a replacement engine and It was rebuilt by a machine shop 14 years ago, Shortly after it was rebuilt, the truck was parked until I moved it. I would appreciate very much if someone can help me ID this engine. Thanks. NCmau

NC, Find what you needed? I recently purchased a 69 CST/10 with the original 396. I hope to have her on the Road by Spring. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I also had trouble identifying the 87 engine(i think) in my 77 truck. If you want to use the engine ID number, try Chevymania! or get a LMC Truck catalog (1-800-562-8782). This is the number stamped on a pad on the passenger side front of the block, and should probably have 3 letters at the end (known as the engine suffix code). If it doesn't have 3 letters it might be a very early block. The first letter of the id number identifies the manufacturing plant and the following numbers indicate a date. Since I have found differences in listings i would try at least 2 different sources for this identification. For identification by casting numbers (raised numbers on the back of the block on the drivers side, I think, and on the heads) try www.jimsperformance.com/blocks.html or try a search for chev casting numbers. Since you stated your engine was rebuilt, it may not match what the numbers say due to extreme interchanging of parts, but you have to start somewhere, I know. Good luck.
