Can you believe this truck ran GREAT?

I got this 69 CST/10 with the 396. I am restoring it. The guy told me it ran GREAT when he parked it, the starter was the only issue. So.... I figured to get her on the road this spring I would worry about the paint and interior, the motor could be cleaned up, painted and finished next winter. But hey, I have to keep it clean, so I thought I would replace the valve and timing cover gaskets as there is some oil on the motor and I wouldn't want it to leake. So... look what I found under those Valve cover gaskets! The penny is shown to give an idea of size. The long piece on the right is old gasket, the smaller piece seems to be metal, and the long skinny piece is just one of many paint pieces.

Ya ya, I know....... I need to take a closer look now. I should have the engine completely torn down this weekend. I have to believe the engine is rather nasty in there.....

pit_boss is on a distinguished road
Being you found it under the valve cover, I kind of think, its either from a shim under a valve spring or part of an exhaust rotater on one of the exh. valve retainers. It really wouldnt make a differance on how it runs, and wouldnt affect oil pressure.

It will when the oil pick-up screen gets full of that stuff, and blocks off oil flow.
Oil pressure tends to drop off, and the engine kinda stops runnin. lol.

for what it costs in gaskets (especially a chevy mill) I think it would be down right silly no to tear down any old motor with an unknown history. check the bearings, ditch the nylon timing gears, all that fun stuff. plus all the leaks are taken care of too.

That's what I was thinking also.... I hope to have it torn down this weekend. It will be interested to see how clean... or dirty it will be. I rebuilt a 350 for my 69 vette I had. The motor came out of a 88 GMC truck, I heard it run and sounded real good, and no smoke. I tore it down to replace all the seals and gaskets, good thing I did. HONEST to GOD! it had 1 (ONE) cup of oil in it! and heads were PACKED with gunk! it was nasty.... I cleaned it up, replaced all the seals and gaskets, I checked the bearings and all was fine. She ran great, but I cannot believe how nasty it was, having heard it and all before it was pulled.

Pit Boss.

I took the heads off this morning and thought this will help in understanding why I was concerned.

Contents:

Contents Resting Here:

Could have easily went through this hole:

From there, would have dropped into the Cam:

I found several more pieces while taking the heads off. Had I waited till the project was complete, I would have risked messing up a completed project or even risked messing up the original motor. A ounce of prevention in this case equals $$$$ of cure!

chuckphillips I am impressed with the photography and the storyboard.
Better than what I'd see in the manuals, nice going.

Thanks Crab. How did we ever survive without phones with camera's!

Pit Boss.... Do you understand what we were talking about now?

Well... I better get off here and drop the pan, hopefully all will be in good shape. The Pistons and Cylinder walls were in good shape.

Pit Boss... Thought you might find this interesting. I removed the Oil pan today, what a gift someone left me!

75K30 - I know I will hear the right answer from you!!! I know... So much pressure put on you!

Oil Pan

Closer Look: Anyone know what these could be from? From the old Distributor, it has a new HEI one now.

Still not sure that it didn't run when the previous owner parked it. He said the starter died and he went to replace it, but the new one didn't fit, so he ended up starting the restoration.
