Tire size on dually

I have a 1991 1 ton Extended Cab Dually that is ready for new rear tires. It has the OEM wheels and it is lowered. The current rear tires are 225/75-16. I know that 235/75-16s will fit. I would like to know if anyone has fitted 245/75-16s on the rear of their lowered dually? If yes, were there any issues?

Thank you in advance.

i personally would run a 245/70 as opposed to the 75, especially on a lowered 1 ton. i haven't personally done it but the only issue i can forsee is the tires touching each other on the rear. a 245 is not really that much bigger than a 225 (roughly 20mm wider)

Thank you, Strokin350. A further search into the Forum archives produced the following post:
I have a ‘95 ext. cab dually and I am currently running 285/75/R16 BF Goodrich.
However, they do rub a little bit. I plan on putting the Road King Baja 255/85/R16 on next week. I was told I could run those with no problem. I'll let you know for sure when I put them on.

I got the new tires on. They are the Big-O at 255/85/16. They fit on my dually perfectly - no modifications needed.

Any thoughts on the 255/85/R16s? Since I have to buy tires anyway, I am hoping to mitigate the 4.10 rear gears a bit.

Thank you.

My son worked at a tire manufacture. He could not believe people would place large size tires on duellys that would allow the tires to touch under load.
most dealers will not install tires on duellys if they will tough under load.

he said tires touching will get very hot and blow out, unsafe act, then try to blame tire manufacture as a defect.
Just my 2 cents.

here's the scoop
225/75R16= diameter 29.3, section width: 8.9, section height: 6.7
235/75R16= diameter 30.5, section width: 9.6, section height: 7.2
245/70R16= diameter 29.5, section width: 9.6, section height: 6.7
285/75R16= diameter 32.8, section width: 11.2, section height: 8.4
255/85R16= diameter 33.1, section width: 10.0, section height: 8.5

I would say that the 255 and the 285 are gonna be way too big, and your best bet would be to run the 245/70's considering they are the same height as stock (.2" difference) and the width is the same as the 235's and the same height as the 225's. so if the 235's will fit than the 245's should also fit. If you wanna "mitigate" your 4.10 gears you might just have to go with a new set of gears. if your truck wasn't a dually there would be no real worries, but being a dually you gotta watch you width.

Thank you for the tire size specs. I will take them with me to the tire shop.

If anyone is interested, I ended up with 4 Dunlop 245/75R-16 tires on the rear. They fit great. They do not rub on the inside and they do not rub on the fenders. I am happy with the results and thankful for the input from this forum.
