Exclamation SBC Engine Rebuild

Took apart my chevy 350 engine to rebuild. Did not pay enough attention to how I took the pistons out of the cylinders. Do they need to go back in the block in any certain order or direction? By direction I mean there is a notch on the piston crown, does that need to go toward the front or rear of the engine? Or?

If you know of any good visual aides or online reference please let me know.

Any help would be great. Thanks

Welcome to the site:
Have you torn the engine completely apart? You must have.
I always feel that a piston bore should be machined to the individual piston, and they should never be mixed up.
The same is true for the rods, rod caps, and main caps. I do not even mix up rod botls, or fasteners after a tear down. Everything goes back to the same spot as it was removed.
That being said, I would be hesitant on installing a piston and a rod into a cylinder that it did not come out of.
The notch on the piston faces or points to the front of the engine. This is important for pistons with 2 valve reliefs. A piston installed the wrong way will allow the valve to hit the piston, and things get ugly after that.

Thanks for the info, I'll definitely make note of this when I seat those pistons back in the cylinders. Thanks again.
