Oil Question

My 96 K1500 5.7L has a little over 211000 miles on it and I was wondering if Amsoil is worth putting it into my truck? I know some people love it and others say it's not worth the money and I m just trying to get some other opinions. You guys have been alot of help to alot of people thanks all form the nice warm -20 degrees of good old Wisconsin.

i use synthetic oil, personally, but i go with valvoline. i'm not convinced there's much of a difference between brands, but i'm not a chemist.. the important thing is to stay consistent. if you go synthetic, stay synthetic, and try to stay with one brand. that's the best advice i can think of.

as far as whether to go with expensive lubricants, it's up to you and your wallet. just try not to switch often.

I don't think it is a good thing to change this late in time but if you do you need to do some sort of flush to get the wax/gunk out of the engine since what i have read the synthetic oils seem to clean out of the engine. This is what has been the cause of engine failures when changing over to synthetic with high mileage. The wax/gunk is a normal byproduct of normal engine oil and the synthetic oil cleanes this stuff out and plugs up the oil filter and causes the engine failures since your oil filter bypasses/ does not clean any oil once it is full the presto you develope a knock in your engine. This is just what i have read and my 2 cents

i use valvoline high mileage, but i have recently heard of people using Rottela oil for diesels in their high mileage gas engines.

my friend has 307 K miles on his 1996 chevy pickup with 350 engine and he just uses std 10W40 oil. Engine just keeps running.

Truck has had a few starters and 2 transmissions, but engine ok.

I also monitor the Fergerson tractor forum.

Fellow on there had an old tractor that was running good and had given no problems. He changed oil, put synthetic oil in motor and in 30 minutes had a locked motor, he was asking what on earth could have happen to his tractor.

Others on forum said "in old equipment that had been running good for many years, not to change oil types at this time.

Maybe because of this wash issue, who knows, however, his motor may have blow on him anyway even if he had not put synthetic oil in motor.

Just my 2 cents!
