Looking at putting some exhaust. What should I do.

I have a 96 1/2 Vortec 350 and I use to have just cats on it and then Johnny Law told me to fix it. So I did I put in a muffler and left it since it was my daily driver. Now I have a car and want to look at putting some good exhaust on. I loved the sound of it when it had just cats but reading on here it looks like that might not of been the best for it. What do you guys suggest I was thinking maybe an X pipe in place of the muffler to keep some back pressure but I don't know. What should I do?

Thanks

What are you looking for out of the exhaust? Just LOUD? or throaty and legal? with dual cats, and and X pipe to equalize it out, running into dual flowmaster 40 series mufflers, you should an even mix of both sound and performance. Just my thoughts though.....

just cats and an X pipe. all i use. VERY quiet when idling, and a loud thump when acceling. sounds like a V8 with an X instead of a pair of 4 bangers.

but i perfer the thump instead of the crack. i'm a low rpm torque guy. i like the hp from 1 to 3 grand, espiecally since it's all overdrive these days and everyone using oversized tires.

Yeah Im looking for a good pure thump Im not into the loud cracking garbage my friend has that on his truck and it sounds horrible. Stumpuller I did the same thing when my truck had just the cats but it was in a parking ramp but I was still pretty proud.
