transmission service

i got a 96 chevy ext cab 4x4 and want to know what has to be done when servicing a transmission. would just change the oil and filter or get a transmission flush. which is better? and whats the procedure for a transmisiion flush? is there bands that have to be adjusted?

A flush will get rid of more of the old fluid but to do the service without changing the filter seems silly to me. If you have to choose between the two pull the pan and chage the filter. There is a reason the most trans don't have a drain plug. You need to change the filter.

I agree, a filter change (or clean) is a must.

How many miles on truck,
what type general service/maintenance has the transmission received in the past?

You need to know answers to these questions before you have a trans flush done. Read other forums,

Transmissions that are in good working order, no problems, and have received regular maintenance should experience no problems from a low pressure flush and filter change.

However, transmissions that has not recieved good general maintenace, a flush can brake away dirt, deposit, etc and cause transmission failure.
If you do not know transmission maintenance history, I would only change oil and filter.

You need to do a internet search on transmission flushing, read all you can about this procedure before you have a flush done on your transmission.

Just my two cent! Why take a chance.

Keep in mind too a flush is simply preventative matinence, and will not fix anything! A lot of people are under the missconception that a flush will solve shifting issues. It won't. I think it is a good idea as part of a regular matinence prgram to flush it every like 60K miles. Just my thoughts though.
