In a true dual exhaust system there would be four, two pre-cat and two post-cat. If there is only one cat then there would be three O2 sensors, one per manifold and one post cat.

So, no. You're not "way off" at all.

I know on my truck, I have one on each manifold, and one right before the cat, and one after. now I have two inline converters, but it is a single exhaust system. That was my reference point. Personally I think it is unecesary to have that many anyways, but if "they" say it is needed then who is to argue, right? LOL.
