Diesel rebuild?

can anybody give me a general idea of how much it would cost to have a shop rebuild an '01 chev 6.6 diesel? i have never tinkered with anything diesel so im not gonna do it. i know that prices can vary so i was wondering if i can get some input from somebody who has had that done? would it be cheaper to buy a used block or even a new crate?

Not sure on prices for either way, but I'd go with GM crate. Usually come with a very good warranty. I do know their prices on stock and performance 5.7's can't be beat. Just helped freind of mine repalce 5.7 in his 82 Chevy, bought crate motor at dealer for 1390.00, 290 hp I think. All new parts no rebuilt and 2 yr warranty. Kinda hard to do rebuild for for much less than that doing it yourself. Just my 2 cents.

Well I kinda figured that, I ment GM crate diesel in your case. Get price on new or rebuilt crate motor then price out parts that you would need to do rebuild plus machine shop work. Just as a point of reference last SBC I built was just short of 800.00 at machine shop, bore block, valve job, balance rotating assembly. Crate diesel may be cheaper than doing rebuild and would come with a much better warranty.
