tire cupping

my 1998 z71 front tires are cupping on the edge. When I replaced the old set (for the same reason) I had alignment checked Now the new set of tires are ruined. Was told the idler arm is the problem and even replacing it won't do much good for very long. Any ideas on the problem

Welcome to the site;
This should be an easy fix. Your shocks are no longer controlling the tire, and they are skipping along causing the cupping.
Scallops will be a result of a poor alignment, cups are from the tire bouncing along. Remove a shock, and check for resistance, you will find worn shocks.
Good luck
