| any parts store could probably get you an OEM part, but since you have it tore down, i would replace them all and have the cylinders honed. you will have to hone the one cylinder anyway for the new rings when you replace the bad piston.

| Another fine suggestion mudseeker. It does not make much sense to take the engine all the way down, and replace just one piston. What was the reason it went bad? Did a valve hit it? Did it get hot and crack? Did it detonate and get torn up, or maybe a foreign object was introduced into the engine and found one cylinder? Either way, all of the pistons are subject to the same potential damage and all have an equal amount of wear and tear. THis means that unless you can absolutly guarantee that damage was limited to one cylinder. Even then, you have to consider that you will still have to hone (at minimum) the cylinder with the replacement piston. This is pretty impossible without contaminating the rest of the engine. You do not want those metal, and abrasive particles sitting around since you will have no way to properly clean up. I know it is not what you wanna hear, but now will bw a good time to remove all of the suspect pistons, and replace them. THe good news, is that you will have a fresh engine, and you can pick up some real performance with a few changes. For example: a set of 2 valve relief pistons will have a slightly higher compression ratio than a set with 4 reliefs, and promote better flame travel, thus providing better power. THe same is true for a larger bore. You will also get a slightly better (dynamic, and static) compression ratio, and the increase in cubic inches (while minimal) will also equal more power. A slightly more aggressive cam will really let this engine work well. AT any rate, I believe you need to seek some additional advice on re-building the entire engine. It is the right thing to do. |
