1976 Cheyenne steering column problem

Loaned the truck to my son and when it came back I couldn't turn the key the second time I cranked it up.

It's a little difficult to very difficult to turn the key. Most of the times it won't go all the way to the extreme crank position. At times it may go but then not engage the starter.

I'm sure this is not an uncommon problem. I'm waiting on a service manual but thought there may be something I could try until it gets here. If you can get it to go to the proper position very occasionally the starter turns over and the truck cranks up and runs fine.

If is a tilt steering wheel but I think the column is stock. There is a vette steering wheel though.

Thanks

i had the eact same problem on my 80 tilt wheel, my factory service manual was very helpfull, cant remember the name of the part but "it" was cracked and sticking then eventually broke, it was the peice that the pin on the key cylinder went into and pulled the ignition switch, had to order part from GM was abit of a pain to change required alot of dissasebly of column, think i need a puller for tilt`s pivots removal,... it was a really long time ago. your manual should tell you what the part is, is "kinda" shaped like a "key" hope this helps abit!

Thanks. figured I'd have to disassemble the thing. I'm waiting on a manual.
