harmonica sound

I just bought a 2004 chevy 2500 HD 4x4 and when I"m at idle, it sounds like harmonica music coming from what I believe is my rear differential. Has anyone had this happen to them? What can you do about it?

Welcome to the site;
Lets see if we understand. The differential is making noise while the vehicle is not in motion?
Perhaps the noise is sourced from a different location. Could it be an exhaust leak from a joint, or bend in the pipe somewhere?
Pipe organs are not that different than your exhaust pipe, and a hole, or opening might just be creating that not so good "music" while the vehicle is at idle.
Now you also need to make sure that you are simply not hearing the electric fuel pump. These can buzz quite loud and might make the noise that you mentioned.

Welcome to the forum mario.
You should also check that a local kid has not hidden his harmonica in your tailpipe,
things like that have happened. Live near munchkins ?

well, i'll get under there tonight when I hear the noise and see if I cannot pin it down. the exhaust is a possibility. It only occurs when i'm at idle and in park, I have not heard it when idling at a stop light while still in gear. The sad thing is, if a kid did stick it in my tailpipe, the **** thing is playing better music than I can on my harmonica, and perhaps that is what is the most frustrating.

HAHAHAHAHA, there is a new tone for a sport exhaust! Who needs glass packs?!?!? just use musical instruments! LOL.

Ok seriously, I would check for exhaust leaks too. A friend of mine had a honda, (I know it is not a truck but...) he had a little exhaust leak too and it sounded like a flute!

I was able to pin that noise down to the muffler. Is this something that needs to be fixed, or is it kind of a "costmetic" thing so to speak? I recently bought the truck from a dealership and they said that if I found something mechanically wrong I could return within 60 days and they would take care of it. Is this something that would be covered in your opinion?

the dealer will not cover the muffler. save some time from the dealer and go to a muffler shop. it's only going to get louder. it wont hurt anything

I would have guessed the fuel pump. When they start to go they get really loud, kinda like a harmonica. The pump is probably a 500-600 dollar job, so I would go back to the dealer and see if they will help you. once they get loud, its a sure sign of failure.
