Transmission Temp

I just purchased a 2500 HD Silverado to pull my travel trailer. The information panel shows temps for the transmission. If I am pulling a mountain and the temp goes up how high should I allow it to go before taking a preventitave action and what would that action be? I previously had a Nissa Armada and it had a gauge that I could watch and gear down or slow down when it heated up. But with the digital I don't know when to act or what I should do with this truck?

180 is about normal operating temp. IIRC 210+ will cause damage if sustained.

250 means shes barbequed, time for a swap, my 4L80E runs 170-175 in city driving, just put my gauge in , don`t know how hot it will get towing, if your moving shes keeps cooler (duh) 210 sounds like a good temp to start considering a break or extra cooling,...

Thanks for the info. If it does start to approach the top temp is it possible to bring it down by slowing down and reducing the gearing. That worked on the Nissan and I assume it will work with the 2500. But I really hate the word *** u me.

I have a truck simular to yours, 2000 model old style chevy 3/4 with 4l80e transmission. Just had to replace torque converter, do not know if problem was caused by towing my 6K trailer or weak converter.

But would like to install a temp gauge, where did you get yours and what was the cost?

Sincerely,

well i installed a B&M deep trans pan, (3extra quarts) from summit racing i drilled and tapped a hole in the driverside nearest the back and installed a temp probe. the trans gauge i got was from auto meter it was there phantom series white faced gauge, the pan cost 175.95 @ summit (part number BMM 70295) the gauge was about 75 from my local truck shop, but you can get cheaper, this one i just liked the look best. summits trans gauges range from 45 to 135 bucks depending on colours and size, options etc. i insatlled a pillar pod with the trans gauge in it and a maniold pressure gauge,...(cause the pods come with two holes and couldn`t think of anything else to put in the extra hole!) keep her coool!
